Samuel Kinner (1603-68) was a physician. Born in Breslau in Silesia, the son of the hymn writer Martin Kinner, he practiced medicine in his native city and later served at Brieg as court physician and counselor to the Duke of Liegnitz-Brieg until his death. His hymn appeared in Jeremias Weber's hymnal (Leipzig, 1638) under the title "A beautiful hymn on the Supper of our Lord." Throughout its stanzas the singers address Christ Himself as the host of the Supper, confessing what He gives in His body and blood. The final stanza notes that as the world rages against Christ's Word, so it rages against His Supper, and it prays that His body and blood remain our hope and consolation in daily life and in the last hour. The first English translation, by Emanuel Cronenwett, appeared in the Ohio Synod's hymnal of 1880; it was revised in 1889, substantially rewritten for The Lutheran Hymnal (1941), and revised again for Lutheran Book of Worship. The tune is by Peter Sohren, who published it in his 1668 edition of Johann Crüger's Praxis Pietatis Melica. LSB appoints the hymn as the Hymn of the Day for the Second Sunday after Trinity.
