This hymn was written by Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769), a mystic Pietist writer who remained in the established church. In 1724, after years of intense prayer and fasting, he experienced so profound a sense of God’s presence that he signed a written covenant with God in his own blood. The original German (Gott ist gegenwärtig), published in 1729, focused on the individual’s inner spiritual life. Because Lutherans ground the presence of God in Word and Sacrament rather than subjective experience, the most mystical stanzas were omitted, and the translation deliberately shifts the focus outward: “God is in His temple” renders the German “God is in the midst of us,” anchoring His presence in the gathered assembly.
